چکیده

O VER the past two decades surgical patient care has undergone a major change. While in the past, most of the surgical procedures required inpatient admissions, now most of the performed operations, an estimated 65% of operations in North America, are completed in ambulatory settings. The improvement of anesthetic and surgical techniques, which resulted in an extremely good safety record of ambulatory procedures, was a prerequisite for this radical increase in the number of surgical procedures performed in ambulatory surgical units. The purpose of this review is to examine what outcome measures can be used in the assessment of the safety of ambulatory surgery and anesthesia, and to summarize the available published results regarding these outcome measures (Table I).

A prospective randomized double-blinded study of the effect of intravenous fluid therapy on adverse outcomes on outpatient surgery.

This study investigated the impact of perioperative fluid status on adverse clinical outcomes in ambulatory surgery. Two hundred ASA grade I-III ambulatory surgical patients were prospectively randomized into two groups to receive high (20 mL/kg) or low (2 mL/kg) infusions of isotonic electrolyte solution over 30 min preoperatively. A standardized balanced anesthetic was used. A minimal amount ...

Risk of postoperative hypoxemia in ambulatory orthopedic surgery patients with diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea: a retrospective observational study

BACKGROUND It is unclear when it is safe to discharge patients with a diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) after ambulatory surgical procedures due to concern for postoperative respiratory compromise and hypoxemia. Our OSA patients undergoing ambulatory-type orthopedic procedures are monitored overnight in the PACU, thus we reviewed patient records to determine incidence of complications....

Omission of nitrous oxide from a propofol-based anesthetic does not affect the recovery of women undergoing outpatient gynecologic surgery.

BACKGROUND Although nitrous oxide (N2O) is used commonly during anesthesia, clinically relevant advantages-disadvantages of using this agent are not well established in the ambulatory setting. This study in women undergoing ambulatory gynecologic surgery compares outcomes in patients administered total intravenous anesthesia with propofol versus the propofol plus N2O. The primary outcome was th...
